Seci Triple Secures Win For Jets

Ipswich Jets centre Pio Seci scored a hat-trick of tries to secure the win over Redcliffe Dolphins 22-16 at North Ipswich Reserve.

This clash wasn’t one for the purist, with both teams exploring short kick-offs, drop-outs and electing to go for penalty goals when they were down by more than four points on the score board.

Ipswich started the game with a mountain of possession and two early penalties putting them on the front foot.

Redcliffe opted to take a leaf out of the Jets’ playbook by successfully attempting a short drop-out.

In the 19th minute, a 40/20 kick from Wes Conlon gave all the momentum back to the Jets which was cut off shortly after with Jonus Pearson rushing out of the defensive line to force an error from Julian Christian.

The Dolphins attempted another short drop-out but this time it backfired, as the Jets recovered the ball and Seci was able to cross the try line for the opening points of the game.

“Getting three in a game, obviously he will get lots of confidence out of that.”

Just before the half-time break, Cameron Cullen put through a precise short cross field kick to a leaping Pearson to level the score.

A perfectly timed short pass from Culllen in the 43rd minute put Jamil Hopoate over the try line to put the Dolphins into the lead for the first and only time in the match.

In the 51st Minute, Ipswich received a penalty ten metres from the try line and opted to go for the two points, even though they were down by six on the scoreboard.

Shortly after the penalty goal, a terrible bomb kick from Dane Phillips, which lost more metres than gained, was recovered nicely by Seci to cross the line for his second try of the match.

Seci took advantage of a noticeably tired Dolphins defensive line, scoring his third try, with Samuel Caslick following suit with a stylish try in the corner minutes later.

But it didn’t take long for Redcliffe to hit back with a one-on-one strip which put Kontoni Staggs across the line for a four-pointer.

“Redcliffe are tough and have very big players”

With eight points down on the scoreboard, Cullen opted for taking a penalty goal right in front of the goal post to bring the Dolphins within six points of Ipswich.

Despite Redcliffe throwing everything at the Jets, Ipswich’s defence proved too strong, coming away with 22-16 victory over the Dolphins.

Ipswich Jets halfback Dane Phillips said after the game Redcliffe were a tough and hard-hitting opponent.

“Redcliffe are tough and have very big players’” he said,

“They are big and strong in the middle and keep coming all day.”

On Seci’s hat-trick of tries, Phillips said this was a late decision to move him time the right side of the field.

“He was [meant to be] on the left side and went to the right, a bit of a change before the game.” he said,

“Getting three in a game, obviously he will get lots of confidence out of that.”

Ipswich Jets 22 (Pio Seci 3, Samuel Caslick tries; Wes Conlon 3 goals) def Redcliffe Dolphins 16 (Jonus Pearson, Jamil Hopoate, Kontoni Staggs tries; Kantoni Staggs 2 goals) at North Ipswich Reserve.
