Brisbane Broncos marque player Jack Bird failed to soar in 2019, Sports Talk Contributor Cameron Anchor takes a look at 2019 for Bird.
After signing a multi-million dollar deal and becoming one of the highest paid Broncos players in history as a marquee signing in 2018, Jack Bird has had a year to forget, he managed only eight games and struggled with his form.
A shoulder reconstruction before the season along with a re-occurring sternum injury throughout ultimately cost him most of the season.
The good news is the surgeon has given Bird the all clear for full contact.
This will be Bird’s first full pre-season with the Broncos and a good opportunity for him to work on combinations with certain players.
Now all the dust has settled on the coaching drama at Brisbane, it’s time for Bird to take this preseason as serious as he can.
He’s previously been bagged for his weight and in order for him to have a successful 2019 he needs to be as fit as possible.
Bird will more than likely be playing in the centres although he does have aspirations to be a long-term half.
I feel as though centre is Bird’s position at least for now.
He has a great tackling technique and can split the defence with an elusive running game.
Exactly what he’ll need to get back to in order for him to rediscover the form that saw him become an NRL premiership winner and NSW representative all before the age of 21.
He’ll need to get some solid performances under his belt early on in the season along with his team, or we could ultimately see his confidence be shattered and Bird an $800,000 dollar a year player, playing in the Intrust super cup.
Or, on the other hand, if he can get back to his best, we could see for the first time ever two Brisbane Broncos centres in the NSW Blues side, the other being James Roberts who was apart of the Blues series win in 2018.
The Broncos have a tough start to the year playing the likes of Storm, Cowboys, Dragons and the Roosters in the first 4 rounds.
Exactly the test Bird will need early on.
For the sake of Jack Bird’s career, and the Broncos season, I feel this year has to be a big one.
